A defense official has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing secret matters in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to discuss secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
The minister said that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Defence Background
This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
The broader defence situation underscores the importance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of government activities, from transport usage to communication practices.
