Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
